“Black Grain Meditation” is an installation exploring the vibration of memory within thecommunion of experience. Wooden constructions contain rendered elemental naturalforms as experienced during a specific moment of meditation from the memory of theartist. These objects serve as devices for an interactive meditation on the voice ofmateriality where we are invited to walk through, sit, meditate, engage, create, andperceive the sound of forms with our presence.

Portals opened must be perceived to be seen – understood. Like in dreams, the elements present in a ritual performance are manifestations of deeper themes. Bodies and spiritual beings – these things are just two layers of our multidimensionality. The finger points to a light, a box contains a memory. A tree stands listening to the flood of stories carried by the wind. In Black Grain Meditation, water, air, and soil are all perceivable and understood as fragments of something more.

MAF and Gugulethu ‘Dumama’ Duma open a portal to call forth memories of the future. The Black Grain Meditation shares a transformative and heavily textured sonic journey through the combination of technology and organic voices flowing through water, grounded in the earth, and developed through a ritual process.

Using granular synthesis and other forms of sound modulation, reactions to the touch of water and earth create a rich sonic landscape amplified by sampling and experimental vocal techniques. Black Grain is a complete performance that attempts to create a portal linking the past, future, and present of African diasporic peoples.
